A tribute to a remarkable stallion
Clear Creek Zeus – “Phoenix”
Phoenix was the grandson of two great Morgan stallions, Merriehill Chicagoan and Courage of Equinox. His quality was so visibly undeniable, even in poor condition, that Morgan Safenet rescued him from the pipeline to certain death. DNA testing verified their suspicions. He came to Starberry when prior to a gelding date, Morgan Safenet offered him intact to a breeder, attempting to preserve his remarkable bloodlines if possible.
Phoenix’s condition had improved hugely under their care, but he was still underweight and malnourished, suffering extensive ulcers and showing clear founder damage in both front feet. X-rays proved chronic founder and rotations, but Phoenix was not lame, had the kindest disposition and sweetest nature. Our vet advised, good care could help keep him comfortable and breeding should not negatively impact his damaged feet. She warned that he would not have a long future, but believed he would tell us when the pain found him.
Careful vet and farrier care along with a healthy and consistent diet stabilized his feet and fixed his ulcers. He spent most of his time living in a pasture with pregnant mares, sharing hay bales and enjoying his time mutual grooming, with breaks to spend getting loved on by his human friends. He sired six remarkable foals and spent three years living his best life with us. Autumn 2025, though, he told us it was time.
We are so grateful for the time we had with Phoenix. We miss him terribly, but we see him in his children every day. We are glad we could give him even just a few short years of peaceful retirement and love.
